Are you experiencing lower back pain? Is it interfering with your daily activities and quality of life? If so, you may be a candidate for Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression (MILD). This is an effective treatment that can provide incredible results for many patients with chronic lumbar back pain, and it is one of the procedures we offer at FullRange Spine & Ortho.

What Is MILD?

MILD is a safe and effective procedure that can help alleviate the symptoms of lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS), which occurs when the spinal canal narrows and puts pressure on the nerves in the lower back. This can lead to pain, numbness, and weakness in the lower back, buttocks and legs, making it difficult to walk and stand for extended periods.

Unlike traditional open spine surgery, MILD is a minimally-invasive procedure that uses small incisions and specialized tools to remove excess tissue and bone that is causing the compression. This means less pain, scarring and a faster recovery time for patients.

Are You a Candidate for MILD?

To determine if MILD is right for you, Dr. NIni or one of his team will thoroughly evaluate your medical history, symptoms, and diagnostic tests such as X-rays and MRIs. If you are a candidate for the procedure, your doctor will discuss the risks and benefits with you and answer any questions.

MILD is typically performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you can go home the same day as the procedure. You will be under local anesthesia and sedation to ensure your comfort during the surgery.

During the procedure, Dr. Nini will make a small incision (about 1 cm in length) in your back and insert a thin instrument that is equipped with a camera and specialized tools that allow Dr. Nini to remove the excess tissue and bone that is causing the compression and narrowing inside the lumbar spine. Once complete, the incision is closed with surgical tape – no stitches are required.

After the surgery, you will be monitored for a short period before being discharged the same day. You may experience some discomfort and soreness in the lower back, but this should subside within a few days. Dr. Nini and his medical team will provide you with specific instructions on how to care for yourself and when you can resume your normal activities.

MILD has been shown to be a safe and effective procedure for the treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis. It has a high success rate and can help improve your quality of life by reducing pain and improving mobility.
