The knee is one of the most frequently injured areas of the body in contact sports, such as football, basketball, soccer, rugby, and lacrosse. Knee arthritis is a common ailment among people with active lifestyles. Dr. Roy Nini is a respected knee doctor in Los Angeles who provides high-quality, personalized, non-surgical care for his patients.
About the Knee
The knee is a system of moving parts consisting of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. It is a hinge that connects the thigh to the rest of the leg and makes it possible to run, jump, turn, and squat.
However, because of its inability to rotate in every direction, the knee is vulnerable to injury and susceptible to conditions that can develop after injuries.

Common Knee Injuries
Injuries to the knee can lead to pain, loss of function, and arthritis. Several types of knee injuries are common among athletes and active people.
Anterior cruciate ligament tears occur frequently in a number of sports. This injury involves damage to the tough, fibrous tissue (anterior cruciate ligament) running diagonally through the knee. This ligament provides rotational stability for the knee and prevents the shinbone from sliding out in front of the thighbone.
A meniscus is a rubbery, C-shaped pad of fibro-cartilage positioned between the shin bone and the thigh bone, two on each knee, at the inner and outer edges. The menisci help balance your body weight across the knee to keep it steady. Meniscus tears usually occur with sudden twisting or turning while the foot is planted and the knee is bent.
This injury occurs when the patella (bone covering the knee) slides or moves out of place, usually toward the outside of the leg. A dislocated kneecap can be caused by direct trauma or a sudden change in direction when the leg is planted. It is a common injury among women.
The medical collateral ligament (MCL) is the most frequently sprained ligament in the knee. MCL sprains occur when the knee is forced inward through impact or stress to the outside of the knee. The MCL connects the top of the tibia (shinbone) to the bottom of the femur (thighbone).
Patellofemoral Stress Syndrome
This condition involves pain in the front part of the knee due to abnormal pressure or motion between the kneecap and the thighbone. It has a number of possible causes, including repetitive use of the knee in activities such as running.
Dull, achy pain in the front and sides of the kneecap
Pain that increases during or after activities such as running, walking, bicycling, or stair climbing
Soreness or stiffness in the knee after prolonged sitting
Pain that causes the knee to give out or the thigh muscle to feel weak
Arthritis of the Knee
The most common type of arthritis in the knee is osteoarthritis, a condition that involves the slow wearing away of joint cartilage. It is likely to develop slowly and cause pain, weakness, and instability over time.
Dr. Nini and Dr. Lee provide non-operative treatments to slow degeneration, increase mobility, and relieve pain associated with knee arthritis, including injections of hyaluronic acid, A2M and corticosteroids.
